Bio
Debby has been teaching yoga in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia since 2003. After college she worked in PR but realized early on it wasn’t for her. She took a leap of faith and set out to find something more fulfilling. After practicing Bikram yoga for a year she decided to attend the teacher training in L.A. Her intention was to teach ‘on the side’, of whatever ‘real’ job she would eventually find, but Debby got bit by the teaching bug right away, and has never looked back. Debby finds so much more satisfaction from watching a student’s practice evolve than she ever did from getting a client’s name in the newspaper!
In an effort to better understand anatomy and physiology, Debby studied at GW toward a Master’s degree in Exercise Science. To continue her yoga education she attended more teacher trainings, including vinyasa trainings with Jimmy Barkan, and Seane Corn. While pregnant Debby got certified to teach pre and post natal yoga. She credits her continued yoga practice for her healthy and strong pregnancy and labor. Yoga has been instrumental in helping Debby heal after labor and bond with her son.
Debby’s classes range from Bikram, to vinyasa, to gentle yoga. She teaches studio classes at Bikram Yoga Tenleytown and Bikram Yoga Rockville, corporate classes, private lessons and workshops. Debby aims to teach with compassion and connect to each student to help them reach their goals. She believes proper alignment will keep students injury free, and with patience and a good foundation any posture is possible over time.
Debby believes in yoga as therapy to heal the body from injury and chronic disease. She has witnessed many students come off of blood pressure and cholesterol medicines, and heal new and old injuries alike. Coming from a long line of diabetics she has experienced, first-hand, yoga’s ability to keep her blood sugar levels under control.
The physical benefits are only half the story. Debby has seen amazing shifts in people’s mental outlook, as well as, their ability to alleviate stress and anxiety. She has noticed patience, self-confidence and peace flourish in even the most Type A student. Debby motivates students to find greater awareness, presence and a deeper acceptance of themselves on their mat, so they can find more joy and satisfaction off their mat. She is honored to be able to share the gift of yoga with so many people.
